Stepping Up to the Plate

Today I took my second trip to Shea Stadium to watch the Mets beat the Reds 9-2. Some friends happened to have an extra ticket, so I joined them for cheering, hot dogs, and several rounds of The Wave.

It appears to have become common practice at stadiums everywhere for each player to choose a song to be blasted as they step up to the plate. I think this may be a tougher decision than choosing a college, breaking up with a significant other, or selecting investments. You have to choose the perfect crowd-pleasing song to inspire confidence, intimidate the other team, and give a little hint about your personality all in a ten second clip.

Which got my friends and I to thinking, what song would we choose? My friend the music teacher thought up several good ones, but I am still at a loss. This kind of decision would take me weeks. Another friend suggested that we choose songs for our entrance into the classroom. I wonder what my kids would do if "Stayin' Alive" or "Who Let the Dogs Out" started playing right before I entered the room. If you have any suggestions, please let me know...

Oh, and if there were any concerns, my newfound fandom has grown even more due to tonight's win, my friends' seemingly endless knowledge of the Mets, and the comradery created by being crammed on the 7 train with all my fellow Mets fans decked out in orange and blue.

How 'bout some Cyndi Lauper: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun or She-bop. If Aretha is more you style then you could try a little Respect.

The only other thing I can think of is Rebel, Rebel by Billie Idol. He would probably bring a crowd to their feet.

In my opinion, there are a few hard fast rules you should follow for picking a song to be played as your personal anthem at a stadium. (Note: These rules also hold true for picking a perfect karaoke song). I think your best bet is to go with a classic. This shows your taste is timeless and not here and now, which I think fits you. It needs to be uptempo. People should know the words to it. It works best if there is a swell near the end that you can capture in your ten second clip.

I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty (sorry Sammy, no acoustic version...keep it upbeat for the fans.)

Lets Get It On by Marvin Gaye (maybe not appropriate if doubling as a classroom song.)

Proud Mary by Tina Turner (need I say more?)

For Once in My Life by Stevie Wonder (nice positive message.)

I Feel the Earth Move by Carole King ( a "power woman" would be a good choice for you Sam. don't read anything into that comment...it's harmless.)

Here I Go Again by Whitesnake (the darkhorse, I know, but it has one hell of a swell, and it shows you have a sense of humor, because nobody takes 80's music seriously...or they shouldn't).

One of the above will do. I would advise you to downlaod them all and dance by yourself in your room in your underwear. Any song that fills your heart with joy and gets your toes a tappin' will do the trick. Good luck.

Definitely "It's Raining Men."

But seriously, I've gotta admit I've had this conversation a number of times and agree it's a vital, soul-revealing decision.

Personally, I always thought it would be interesting to do show tunes or movie soundtracks. For instance, "The Imperial March" from Star Wars, the Indiana Jones theme song or the main theme from Hook. (Check out iTunes or Amazon, close your eyes and visualize your appearance while listening.)

Or if you're just going for a stadium-wide WTF, select from Elmo singing the Chicken Dance, the Mario Bros soundtrack, or Barney's classic "I Love You, You Love Me."

Remember, the key is choosing something memorable. After all, you don't wanna play just another hip-hop beat or rock tune that momentarily gets the crowd moving. You wanna be legendary.

And, in case that's not enough, it wouldn't hurt to throw in a few dance moves on the way to the batter's box. Just for good measure.
